LAX Airports

The Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) is a department within the City of Los Angeles that oversees the area’s two major airports. We are run by a seven-member board of airport commissioners who are appointed by the mayor.

LAWA owns and operates Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) - ranked as the seventh busiest in the world and the third busiest in America, and Van Nuys International Airport (VNY) - ranked the busiest general aviation airport and 25th in the world for the number of flight operations.

Each of these airports plays an important role in helping to meet regional demand for passenger, cargo, and general aviation services. When taken as a whole, the airport system provides a high level of safety, security, and service for employees, customers, and stakeholders in the communities we serve.

We currently employ nearly 2,500 people throughout the LAWA system, and because we control all of our own revenue sources, our employees are able to enjoy more job security and many additional benefits that other city employees may not get.
